Created in 2017, the FT8 mode of making contacts using digital messages has become the most popular of the various data modes. It's popularity is due to it's simple setup coupled with it's good performance in weak signal and high noise situations. There are dedicated frequencies in HF from 6-meters through 160-meters, so there's always a band that's open enough to make contacts. The 6- meter and 10-meter frequencies for FT8 are available for technician class operators and there is quite often a lot of activity on 10-meters.
The equipment needed to do FT8 are pretty simple. You need a HF transceiver, a computer, and a way to get sound in and out of the transceiver from the computer. Most modern HF transceivers have a USB interface which offers a direct sound interface, but external sound card interfaces are available for older rigs that don't have a USB connection. Beyond the hardware requirement, you will need to download the WSJT-X software on your computer which supports FT8 and a number of other digital communications modes.
The links below provide additional explanation of FT8 as well as basic operating instructions. There is also a link below to the WSJT-X software, which is free.
